Mindfulness in Education

Two of the most important skills to develop for learning across the lifespan are the ability to pay attention and being able to manage our emotions. Learning how to be more mindful can improve both these skills. It’s no wonder learning about mindfulness at school is gaining popularity every day!

Thrive services in the education sector cover early childhood, primary and secondary schools, tertiary education and all other education organisations. Both employee and student performance and wellbeing are the focus of our work in education. Both employee and student wellbeing are the focus of our work in education and we advocate a whole organisation approach to wellbeing.

Mindfulness and Yoga for Early Childhood

Teaching mindfulness and yoga in the early years can promote two of the most important life skills a child needs to become a happy and healthy adult, the ability to pay attention and managing emotions. Thrive can offer one off mindful movement and yoga incursions or a short series of incursions.

This story, from the parent of a 5 year old after just 10 fifteen minute sessions demonstrates just how powerful mindfulness can be in the early years!

Lucy enjoys learning mindfulness every much, and she even teaches me and my husband at home with a little bell. It’s amazing that she understands the concept, and while teaching us she encouraged and helped us to concentrate on our own feelings.
There was a time when we took Lucy to a play centre, and while playing  in the jumping castle, Lucy and a boy bumped into each other. Lucy apologised to him but the boy refused to say sorry. She then got a bit upset because she found him to be rude. But then, she went sat in a quiet area, closed her eyes, and after 3 deep breaths, she stood up and ran back to us and said “I was doing mindfulness, and now I’m not upset anymore, only need 3 deep breaths“. I have to admit we were totally amazed!!

Early research suggests that we can teach young children mindfulness by making the content age-appropriate. This research is finding that the substantial benefits in relation to emotional regulation and paying attention that we are seeing in the research findings with older children and adults also appear to apply in the early childhood setting.

We also run mindfulness professional development sessions for staff  and education sessions for parents which in turn benefit the children as well.

Mindfulness for Schools

The US-based Mindful Schools Curriculum Training has informed Thrive’s mindfulness in education program and is one of the primary recognised gold standard programs for teaching mindfulness in the education sector. Visit the Kids Matter website to learn how the Mindful Schools program can be used in the Australian context.

The education sector is at the forefront of using mindfulness across a variety of settings. The reasons are many; on the one hand to equip students with life-skills to manage stress and help students reach their potential, and of course to facilitate effective learning. And that’s just for the students! Teachers are reporting huge benefits as well, with classrooms that are easier to manage and lower stress levels. Anecdotal reports are one thing, but the research results are also impressive.
